On Thursday, November 21st, a group of students from the Debate Team represented Northeast at the first tournament of the year at Como Park High School in Saint Paul. Team members who attended are 6th graders Elsa Osmond and Angel Wood along with 8th graders Olivia Delarosa, O'cyress Delarosa, Faith McCollow, and Tanaje'a Copeland. This year's debate resolve is "The United States government should substantially increase its economic engagement with Mexico." To prepare for this tournament, students spent hours practicing public speaking skills and researching the topic. Throughout the evening, students were challenged to debate either in favor of or against this year's resolve, so they had to be familiar with both sides of the issue.
Overall, Northeast did extremely well for its first time participating in the Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL), an organization consisting of 20 schools throughout the Twin Cities and surrounding communities. One of our pairings even placed 8th out of about 70 debates that took place in our division! At the end of the evening, students participated in an awards ceremony and enjoyed a pizza dinner provided by MNUDL. NEMS students left feeling very challenged and happy to have participated.
Debate meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school in Room 202. Students interested in participating in this academically challenging and rewarding activity should talk to Ms. Kapala or Mr. Grandys.
