Recently, the AVID students at Northeast Middle School have been learning about John Armistead. They read and discussed one of his books, "The $66 Summer." They explored his website (www.johnarmistead.com), and they looked at his artwork ... in addition to being an author, Mr. Armistead is also a painter, journalist, and minister.
The AVID students came prepared, and they kept Mr. Armistead busy answering questions about his books, his art, his life story, and his inspirations. The students were intrigued with Mr. Armistead's story about growing up as a poor reader who hated reading aloud in class. He also talked about how growing up in Mississippi has affected his views on how people of different races and cultures can and should get along. In conclusion, Mr. Armistead read from his book "The Return of Gabriel" which is set in 1964 and addresses race relations.
Northeast Middle School would like to thank John Armistead and Milkweed Editions for inspiring our students!
