On Thursday, May 28th, all NEMS 8th graders and some 7th graders partipated in this year's Model UN. The students were well-informed, invested, passionate, and creative. Through this experience, students learned about world issues, public speaking, compromise, and collaboration. As one observer remarked, "They made me wish they really were the delegates for the United Nations!"
Since 2011, the high quality program of Model UN has been a Northeast Middle School tradition, and we are fortunate to work with the United Nations Association of Minnesota which supports this event with curriculum and professional, motivated staff.
Preparing for the event requires intense research and intense writing. In small groups, students work to become experts on their assigned country and the theme of the conference which is "refugees." During the event, students spend the day representing their country as they write, negotiate, and attempt to pass official resolutions.
Congratulations to all the delegates on a job well done!
