NEMS Beautification Day (Video)

On Saturday September 19th, 2009, 110 volunteers from the Northeast community, American Express, and Delta Airlines converged to change the landscape of Northeast Middle School by painting murals, organizing the media center, cleaning the courtyard, putting in a bike rack, and building new benches.

With a diverse group of people working side by side all morning, the work got done.  There were kids with parents, friends, co-workers, and community leaders taking part of what became a successful day.  Mary Rathsbandith of Delta Airlines brought a handful of friends with her to paint the mural titled “Travel With Your Mind,” painting the plane on the mural with Delta’s colors.  Working steady in the media center along-side our Library Media Specialist were a few families, one of them being Sherri Buckman and her son Adam. Sherri, who loves to volunteer, stated, “It’s such a huge task, but with all these people doing it...WOW!”
Early in the day, WCCO TV sent a crew to shoot some footage which later was shown on their newscast.  At the end of the day many of the volunteers gathered for a parting picture.  Dr. Udupa received, on the behalf of NEMS, a gift of $2,000 donated by American Express.  This gift will be used toward improving our library media center.
