Dozens of parents stopped by the Family Involvement Group (F.I.G.) table during Thursday’s Open House at Northeast Middle School. Current F.I.G. participants welcomed new families, answered questions, and “sold” over thirty parents on signing up. Motivated by the opportunity to stay engaged with their students’ educational development, parents who signed up earned a chance to win one of several prizes contributed by local businesses: "Brunch for Two" at Jax Café, a gift certificate for Amici Bistro, and a designer coffee mug from Coffee House NE.

F.I.G. provides a monthly forum for parents in the form of meetings every 2nd Thursday. F.I.G. is a great way to get  acquainted with other NEMS parents, learn about what is going on at your student's schoo, explore common interests, and work toward shared goals.

While last year was formative in emphasis, this year F.I.G. hopes to grow parent participation, expand volunteer opportunities, and ensure that families voices are heard. NEMS staff members recognize that our parents represent an enormous pool of knowledge, professional expertise, life experience, and practical wisdom – and that getting them involved in school enables our students to tap into that wealth of information. Research has demonstrated repeatedly – and conclusively - that parent involvement boosts student achievement.
