We are happy to report that Northeast Middle School received a $10,000 grant from the Coughlan Companies Corporate Giving Program. The Capstone Publishing Company is a part of Coughlan, and they are sending us $10,000 worth of titles we requested for our Reading classrooms. We are so very excited to add these new materials to our resources because we know that striving readers want interesting, fun books to read. There is nothing stopping us now!
In addition to this great news, our Reading department is growing. Northeast is determined to have all 6th graders at and above grade level in reading as soon as possible. This year, all 6th graders have a Language Arts/Reading Block. In addition to that, all students who are not yet proficient in reading have a Reader Workshop Class. This focus effort in 6th grade is intended to help each student reach his or her full potential!
Teachers returning to the Reading Team this year are Liz Patrick (6th Grade), Taunya Decook (6th Grade), Jim Egan (6th, 7th and 8th Grade Special Education) and Lynn Lurvey (Reading Coach and 6th Grade). We welcome one new reading teacher this year, Janice Evans (7th and 8th Grade).
Northeast wants everyone to become expert readers of fiction and non-fiction texts! We have a tremendous Media Specialist, Karen Eidem, who is always helping students find books that interest them. We have an impressive Language Arts team supporting readers and writers: Veann Beutler (6th Grade), Sean Baldwin (7th Grade), Jeff Darling (8th Grade) and Caroline Long (Special Education). In addition, our core content teachers and specialists integrate reading and vocabulary a great deal throughout their classes.
We invite family and community members to support reading efforts outside of school. Reading together or reading quietly at home on a regular basis is an important discipline. So let's get busy and start reading more!
