Rowe letter / Peaceful Protest

Northeast Community,

I wanted to touch base with you all after a week of churn and discovery, a week where staff and students alike have taken the time to reflect, advocate and begin to heal.

Let me give you a very brief overview of our week without going into details that can be both subjective and inflammatory:

  • Some 8th grade students on Tuesday were reportedly defacing school property with a racial slur.
  • A teacher read the slur out loud from student texts about it, sharing that use of the word was unacceptable.
  • Student response to use of the word was immediate and ongoing, including a march, a sit-in, threats, a petition, and today, a walkout.

I’d like to recognize our teachers for their willingness to address hard topics this week, our students for standing up for what they believe is right, and our families for raising children who care about the world they are growing into.

I have personally spoken this week with dozens of families about their children’s involvement or the impact on their children. I have met with staff to help them understand and continue to effectively work with students around the issues involved. I’ve conducted restorative circle discussions with dozens of students. And district leadership is helping guide us through further investigation of all the activities especially as they relate to Northeast staff.

I’m now asking us all to take a breath and pause. If you’ve been paying attention to recent MPS Board meetings, you’ll know that our school district has created a committee that is charged with creating a Hate/Bias Incident Protocol. Go to the Board presentation at this link to learn more about this work on Slides 42-45. MPS and Northeast both want a fair and just response in situations like this.

For now, I encourage all of us to enjoy this fall weekend and return on Monday to continue our teaching, learning and growth. Thank you all.
