Personal Electronic Devices

In order to increase student achievement and engagement, Northeast Middle School is working to eliminate distractions in our learning environment.

Accordingly, all personal electronic devices are to be put in lockers at the start of each school day and are not to be accessed until the end of the school day. Personal electronic devices should not be used or visible from bell to bell (9:30 AM-4:00 PM). This will support students in accessing the curriculum fully, engaging with peers to communicate and collaborate in a 21st century learning environment.

Students who have a personal electronic device on them during the school day will be asked to turn it into a staff member. The staff member will bring it to the main office where it will be labeled with the student’s name and locked in a drawer.

If it is the first time that a student's personal electronic device has been taken, it will be turned into the main office and can be retrieved at the end of the school day. Any time after that first time, the personal electronic device will only be returned after a family contact has been made and the family member and staff member have discussed a plan to prevent future issues.

If you need to contact a student during the school day, please call the main office and we will help you to do so.

This is in accordance with Minneapolis Public Schools' Policy 5210: Student Personal Electronic Devices, the purpose of which is "to establish the parameters for the student possession and use of personal electronic devices that are capable of transmitting or receiving data or images."
